Description

Marbofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolones which acts by inhibition of DNA gyrase. It is effective against a wide range of Gram positive bacteria (in particular Staphylococci) and Gram negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Morganella morganii, Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Pasteurella spp., Haemophilus spp., Moraxella spp., Pseudomonas spp.) as well as Mycoplasma spp.

Indications

Cattle:
Treatment of respiratory infections caused by marbofloxacin-sensitive bacterial strains such as Pasteurella mutocida, Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica en Mycoplasme bovis. Treatment of acute mastitis caused by E.coli strains sensitive to marbofloxacin during the lactation period. 

Pigs:
Treatment of Metritis Mastitis Agalactia syndrome (postpartum dysgalactiae syndrome, PDS) caused by susceptible strains of organisms. 

Contra indications

None.

Side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions.

Dosage

Cattle:
2 mg per kg body weight per day (1 ml per 50 kg bw) (via intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous administration) once a day for 3-5 days or a single intramuscular dose of 8 mg per kg body weight (2 ml per 25 kg bw) for respiratory infections.

Pigs:
2 mg per kg body weight per day (1 ml per 50 kg bw) intramuscularly once a day for 3 days.

Withdrawal times

Cattle:

- Meat and offal                        :      6 days.
- Milk (3-5 days treatment)      :    36 hours.
- Milk (single dose treatment)  :    72 hours.

 

Pigs:

- Meat and offal                        :    4 days.
