Description
Ciprofloxacin belongs to the group of quinolones and has bactericidal action against mainly Gram-negative bacteria, like Campylobacter spp., E. coli, Haemophilus spp., Mycoplasma spp., Pasteurella spp. and Salmonella spp. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone derivative in veterinary medicine with outstanding antibacterial activity primarily against Gram-negative pathogens, but also Gram-positive bacteria and some Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and many Mycobacterium species. Therefore, ciprofloxacin is used as a potential therapeutic application for many types of infection. Ciprofloxacin has bactericidal activity. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis by binding to and inhibiting the action of DNA gyrase, or topoisomerase IV, enzymes responsible for mediating the supercoiling of DNA in DNA replication. Ciprofloxacin stops the multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of their genetic material (DNA).
Indications
Gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infections caused by ciprofloxacin-sensitive microorganisms, like Campylobacter spp., E. coli, Haemophilus spp., Mycoplasma spp., Pasteurella spp. and Salmonella spp. in calves, lambs, kids, swine and poultry.Contra indications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin.
Administration to animals with a serious impaired renal and/or hepatic function.
Concurrent administration of tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, macrolides and lincosamides.
Side effects
Hypersensitivity reactions.
Administration to juvenile animals can lead to arthropathy.
Dosage
For oral administration.
Calves, lambs and kids:
Twice daily 5 ml per 100 kg body weight for 3 - 5 days.
Swine:
100 ml per 200 - 600 litres of drinking water for 3 - 5 days.
Poultry:
100 ml per 400 litres of drinking water for 3 - 5 days.
Note: for pre-ruminant calves, lambs and kids only.
Withdrawal times
For meat: 12 days.
