Penstrep-400 LA

Procaine & benzatine penicillin & dihydrostreptomycin injection

  • Composition
  • Procaine penicillin G – 100 000 IU.
  • Benzathine penicillin G – 100 000 IU.
  • Dihydrostreptomycin sulfate – 200 mg.

Description

The combination of penicillin G and dihydrostreptomycin has additive action and in some cases synergistic action. Procaine and benzathine penicillin G are small-spectrum penicillins with a bactericidal action against mainly Gram-positive bacteria like Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix spp., Listeria spp., penicillinase-negative Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp.
Dihydrostreptomycin is an aminoglycoside with a bactericidal action against mainly Gram-negative bacteria like E. coli, Campylobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Haemophilus spp., Pasteurella spp. and Salmonella spp.

Indications

Arthritis, mastitis and gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infections caused by penicillin- and dihydrostreptomycin-sensitive microorganisms like Campylobacter spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., E. coli, Erysipelothrix spp., Haemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Listeria spp., Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. in cattle, calves, sheep, goats and swine.

Contra indications

Hypersensitivity to penicillins, procaine and/or aminoglycosides.
Administration to animals with a seriously impaired renal function.
Concurrent administration of tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, macrolides and lincosamides.

Side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions, ototoxity, neurotoxity or nephrotoxicity.
The sudden release of too large quantities of procaine in the bloodstream may result in shivering, vomiting, incoordination, fever, and - after one to three days - in abortion in sows.

Precautions:
Procaine penicillin preparations can occasionally result in abortion in pregnant sows.
Benzylpenicillin should not be used concomitantly with bacteriostatic chemotherapeutics because of possible antagonism of the bactericidal action of benzylpenicillin by these drugs.
