Procaine and benzathine penicillin G are small-spectrum penicillins with a bactericidal action against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria like Campylobacter spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix spp., Haemophilus spp., Listeria spp., Pasteurella spp., penicillinase negative Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. Because of the slow resorption of benzathine penicillin G, the action is maintained for two days.
Arthritis, mastitis and gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infections caused by penicillin sensitive microorganisms like Campylobacter spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix spp., Haemophilus spp., Listeria spp., Pasteurella spp., penicillinase-negative Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. in cattle, calves, sheep, goats and pigs.
Hypersensitivity to penicillin and/or procaine.
Administration to animals with a seriously impaired renal function.
Concurrent administration of tetracyclins, chloramphenicol, macrolides and lincosamides.
Administration of therapeutic dosages of procaine penicillin G can result in abortion in sows.
Ototoxity, neurotoxicity or nephrotoxicity.
Hypersensitivity reactions.
Precautions:
Special precautions for use in animals
Shake well before use and do not administer more than 20 ml in cattle, more than 10 ml in pigs or more than 5 ml in calves, sheep and goats per injection site.
Do not combine Procaben LA with bacteriostatic chemotherapeutics because of a possible antagonism of the bactericidal action of benzylpenicillin by these drugs.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the product
Because of possible sensitisation and contact dermatitis, skin contact with the preparation should be avoided when administering the product.
For intramuscular administration.
Cattle:
1 ml per 20 kg body weight.
Calves, sheep, goats and swine:
1 ml per 10 kg body weight.
- For meat: 14 days.
- For milk: 3 days.
