Xylazine has sedative, analgesic and muscle-relaxing properties.
Indications
All cases where sedation is required including, handling fractious animals e.g. during transport or hoof treatment, medical examination e.g. in the oral cavity or taking x-rays, pre-medication for minor superficial operations, painful procedures and local or regional anaesthesia.
Contra indications
Do not use in the latter stages of pregnancy except at parturition. As the safety of xylazine use during organogenesis has not been fully demonstrated by current methods, it should be used with caution during the first month of pregnancy. In the cat and dog, because of the emetic effect which is sometimes produced, Xyla should not be used in mechanical complications of the alimentary tract such as obstruction of the oesophagus, gastric torsion or hernia.
Side effects
Decreased heart and respiratory rate. Hypersalivation and vomiting.
Dosage
Horses: 3 – 5 ml per 100 kg body weight by intravenous administration.
Cattle : For intramuscular administration.
- dose 1: 0.25 ml per 100 kg body weight; sedation, small operations. - dose 2: 0.5 ml per 100 kg body weight; small operations. Animals usually remain standing. - dose 3: 1 ml per 100 kg body weight; larger operations. Animals lie down. - dose 4: 1.5 ml per 100 kg body weight; very extensive operations. Animals have to fast for a couple of hours before administration.
Dogs: 0.05 – 0.15 ml per kg body weight by intramuscular or intravenous administration. Other administration routes may be used, but the effect is less predictable.
Cats: 0.15 ml per kg body weight by intramuscular or subcutaneous administration.
