Glucose is the most important carbohydrate that supplies the body with energy and the necessary metabolites to synthesize amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides and nucleic acids. It is involved in the formation of carbohydrate reserves (glycogen) both in the liver and in the muscles, and is used in all tissues, including nervous tissue, myocardium, striated muscle tissue (cardiac and skeletal muscles) and liver. Glucose is transported to most cells by specific transport proteins.
Glucochem-400 is indicated to treat energy deprivation, including hypoglycaemia and clinical ketosis in horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs and cats.
Do not use in case of hyperglycaemia, excessive hydration or hypotonic dehydration.
Do not administer extravenously.
Hypertonic glucose solution can irritate peripheral veins, causing topical thrombosis inflammation. When administered as a single fluid, it may lead to water and electrolyte imbalances, including hypokalaemia, hypophosphataemia and hypomagnesaemia. Prolonged or rapid dosing of high doses may increase diuresis and cause dehydration.
Overdose may cause hyperglycaemia and osmotic diuresis.
For slow intravenous administration only.
The preparation should be slowly administered at 0.5 g glucose per kg bodyweight per hour:
Horses and cattle:
100 to 125 g of glucose equivalent to 250 to 312.5 ml of the preparation.
Sheep, goats and pigs:
12.5 to 25 g of glucose equivalent to 31 to 62.5 ml of the preparation.
Piglets, dogs and cats:
1.25 to 7.5 g of glucose equivalent to 3 to 19 ml of preparation.
The preparation should be warmed to body temperature before administration. The preparation is not compatible with aminophylline, soluble barbiturates, erythromycin, hydrocortisone, warfarin, kanamycin, soluble sulfonamides and vitamin B12.
