Halosan Oral

Halofuginone 0.05% oral liquid

  • Composition
  • Contains per ml:
  • Halofuginone (as lactate)
    0.5 mg.

Description

Halofuginone is an antiprotozoal agent of the quinazolinone derivatives group (nitrogenous polyheterocycles). The compound has a cryptosporidiostatic effect on Cryptosporidium parvum. It is mainly active on the free stages of the parasite (sporozoïte, merozoïte). The bioavailability of the drug in the calf, following single oral administration, is about 80%. The product is mainly excreted in the urine.

Indications

In newborn calves, Halosan Oral is indicated for:

- Prevention of diarrhoea due to diagnosed Cryptosporidium parvum, in farms with history of cryptosporidiosis, with administration to be started in the first 24 to 48 hours of age.
- Reduction of diarrhoea due to diagnosed Cryptosporidium parvum, with administration to be started within 24 hours after the onset of diarrhoea.

Contra indications

Do not use Halosan Oral on an empty stomach.
Do not use in case of diarrhoea for more than 24 hours and in weak animals.

Side effects

An increase in the rate of diarrhoea has been observed in very rare cases in treated animals.

Dosage

For oral use in calves after feeding.

General:
1 ml per 5 kg body weight (100 µg halofuginone base / kg body weight) once a day for 7 days.

Calves 35 - 45 kg:
8 ml once a day for 7 consecutive days.

Calves 45 - 60 kg:
12 ml once a day for 7 consecutive days.

Use after colostrum feeding, or after milk or milk replacer feeding only. Due to toxic potential it is crucial to strictly adhere to the prescribed dose rate. Use either a syringe or any appropriate device for oral administration to ensure the correct dosage. Consecutive treatment should be done at the same time each day. Once the first calf has been treated, all the forthcoming newborn calves must be systematically treated as long as the risk for diarrhoea due to C. parvum persists.

Withdrawal times

Meat and offal: 13 days.

Packaging

Bottles of 490 and 980 ml.
