Xyla-100

Xylazine 10% injection

Composition

  • Xylazine base – 100 mg.

Description

Xylazine is an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist. By binding to central presynaptic receptors, it inhibits the release of norepinephrine, resulting in sedation, muscle relaxation and analgesia.

Indications

Xyla-100 is a sedative with analgesic and muscle relaxant properties for use in horses, wild animals and zoo animals, in cases where sedation is required premedication during general anaesthesia.

Contra indications

Do not use in cases of severe renal, hepatic or heart failure. Do not use in horses with pulmonary disease (breathing deficiency) or ventricular arrhythmia, predetermined history of seizures, hypotension, shock.

Side effects

In general, side effects, typical for an α2-adrenergic agonist, like bradycardia, reversible arrhythmia and hypotension can occur. Also, dry mouth and hyperglycaemia can occur. Thermoregulation can be influenced and consequently body temperature can decrease or increase dependant on the ambient temperature. Depression of respiration and / or respiratory arrest can occur.
In case of intramuscular administration reversible local tissue irritation can occur. In very rare cases xylazine may induce mild colic in horses as the gut motility is depressed temporarily.

Dosage

Intravenous (horse) or intramuscular (horse, zoo or wild animal) administration.

Horses
The dose of xylazine is 0.6 - 1.0 mg per kg body weight.

Intravenous:
0.6 - 1.0 mg/kg body weight
(corresponding to 0.6 - 1.0 ml/ 100 kg body weight)

Intramuscular:
1.5 - 3.0 mg/kg body weight
(corresponding to 1.5 - 3.0 ml/ 100 kg body weight)

As with all centrally acting medicines, slow intravenous administration of Xyla-100 is recommended.
Intramuscular anaesthesia: Administer 2 mg xylazine per kg body weight, equivalent to 2 ml of 10% solution per 100 kg body weight.

Zoo or wild animal
Intramuscular administration.
The dose depends on the species and the desired effect. The drug can be administered using a hypodermic weapon. If the effect is insufficient, the medicine can be given a second time 30 to 60 minutes after the first administration. If necessary, repeat the procedure the next day with a higher dose. The bottle cap can be pierced not more than 15 times with a needle.
