Pen-300

Procaine pen G injection

  • Composition
  • Procaine penicillin G – 300 000 IU.

Description

Procaine benzylpenicillin is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic with bactericidal activity against mainly Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative aerobes. It is sensitive to beta-lactamase (penicillinase) inactivation. It is widely distributed in the extracellular fluids after absorption, and eliminated almost entirely by the kidneys. Procaine penicillin gives high initial blood levels; treatment may be repeated at 24- or 48-hour intervals to maintain prolonged therapeutic levels.

Indications

Pen-300 is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria sensitive to penicillin in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats.

Contra indications

Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to one or more of the ingredients.
Do not use in case of infections caused by penicillinase-producing microorganisms.
Do not administer intravenously.
Do not combine with bacteriostatic antibiotics.

Side effects

Allergies to penicillin have been observed but these are very rare. If such signs of sensitivity occur, stop medication and call your veterinarian. In some instances, particularly if respiratory distress is severe, immediate injection of epinephrine or antihistamine may be necessary. Potentially fatal reactions associated with the administration of procaine penicillin in horses have been observed.
In suckling and fattening pigs, administration of products containing procaine penicillin may cause transient pyrexia, vomiting shivering, listlessness and incoordination. In pregnant sows and gilts, a vulval discharge which could be associated with abortion has been reported.
