Banixin-50

Flunixine 5% injection

  • Composition
  • Flunixin (as flunixin meglumine) – 50 mg.

Description

Flunixin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and a non-narcotic analgesic with antipyretic properties. It is used in the alleviation of inflammation and pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders and colic. In addition it is used for the control of acute inflammation reactions associated with infectious diseases. Flunixin is also applied as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of respiratory diseases.

Indications

Horses: Banixin-50 is indicated for the alleviation of inflammatory signs associated with musculoskeletal disorders and for the alleviation of visceral pain associated with colic.

Cattle: Banixin-50 is indicated for the control of pyrexia associated with bovine respiratory disease, endotoxemia and acute bovine mastitis. Banixin-50 is also indicated for the control of inflammation in endotoxemia and as an adjunct to antimicrobial therapy to reduce clinical signs of acute inflammation in cases of infectious respiratory disease.

Pigs: Banixin-50 is indicated as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of swine respiratory diseases.

Contra indications

Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.
Do not use in horses used in competitive sports.
Do not administer to pregnant mares or sows, or 48 hours before expected parturition until postpartum expulsion of the placenta in cows.
Do not use in lactating mares producing milk for human consumption.
Do not use in bulls intended for breeding, as reproductive effects of Banixin-50 in these classes of cattle have not been investigated.
Do not administer to dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals or animals suffering from cardiac, hepatic or renal disease.
Banixin-50 is contraindicated in animals with risk of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, where there is evidence of a blood dyscrasia or hypersensitivity to the product.
Do not administer to animals undergoing general anaesthesia until fully recovered.
Avoid intra-arterial injection or concurrent administration of other NSAIDs and nephrotoxic drugs.
Use in any animal less than 6 weeks of age or in aged animals may involve additional risks.

Side effects

Adverse reactions include gastrointestinal irritation, ulceration, changes in haematology and, in dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals, a potential for renal damage.

Dosage

For intramuscular or intravenous administration.

Horses:
1 ml per 45 kg body weight by intravenous injection only. Treatment may be repeated once or twice if colic recurs. In case of musculoskeletal disorders, treatment is once daily for up to 5 days according to clinical response.

Cattle:
2 ml per 45 kg body weight. Repeat if necessary at 24 h intervals for up to 3 consecutive days.

Pigs:
2 ml per 45 kg body weight once by intramuscular injection only.
The injection volume should be limited to a maximum of 5 ml per injection site.

An appropriately graduated syringe must be used to allow accurate administration of the required dose volume. This is particularly important when injecting small volumes. When intramuscular injection is used, the dose should be divided between two injection sites on either side of the neck.
In order to prevent excessive broaching of the rubber stopper, it is not recommended that the stopper is broached more than 25 times.
Inject the product slowly, and apply at body temperature. Administration should be stopped immediately if signs of intolerance occur. An adequate water supply should be provided.
